Foundations for Educational Interpreting

Language Access, Federal Mandates, and Systems (An Overview of the U.S. School System)

This introductory lesson to educational interpreting focuses on the structure of the U.S. educational system from kindergarten through high school, providing bilingual staff with essential context about how Federal, state, and local governments shape education policies. This course concentrates on mapping the educational landscape, including a review of different school types and the legal requirements for language assistance through key legislation such as Title VI, ADA, and IDEA. This foundational knowledge about the education system and parental participation rights, particularly for linguistically diverse and Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing families, provides context for practical interpreting skills taught in other courses.

Written Translation Techniques

Focusing on written translation competencies, this course offers insights into how to systematically convert educational documents from one language to another. The course covers document analysis, preparation strategies, cultural adaptation techniques, and quality assurance protocols.

Sight Translation Techniques

Sight Translation Techniques teaches bilingual staff to render written materials orally from one language to another on the spot, giving the people in the room immediate spoken access to written materials. The course covers systematic preparation techniques, delivery methods, and specialized strategies for handling a variety of document types.

Consecutive Interpretation Techniques

This course develops consecutive interpreting competencies for precise, detailed language access in critical K-12 educational moments. Participants will build essential note-taking techniques, develop sophisticated memory strategies, and learn to manage turn-taking in complex multi-participant meetings.

Introduction to Interpreting in Special Education

This course focuses on the specialized realm of special education interpreting within K-12 environments. Topics cover the comprehensive legal landscape governing disability services, decode the multi-step journey from initial concerns to service implementation, and develop techniques for interpreting in emotionally complex, technically demanding meetings. Participants will gain skills needed to interpret during IEP meetings, eligibility determinations, and transition planning sessions. The course also covers the distinctive challenges of supporting families navigating unfamiliar systems while teaching how to bridge linguistic and cultural divides without overstepping professional boundaries.

Ethical Decision Making

This course develops capacity for principled decision-making in complex K-12 educational environments. Participants will explore foundational ethical principles that guide professional interpreting practice, build a structured decision-making framework, and cultivate analytical abilities to address challenging scenarios involving minors, families, and educational professionals. Participants will develop moral reasoning skills required to handle confidentiality dilemmas, role boundary challenges, and cultural mediation requests. The course also covers how to apply various ethical codes strategically, utilize professional resources effectively, and maintain consistent ethical practice under pressure while serving diverse educational communities.
